WHAT is going on in India? Has the land of acceptance and diversity become intolerant? It sure seems that way from reading the aggressive comments in response to the Bollywood film megastar Shah Rukh Khan when he expressed his serious concerns and worries regarding the direction his beloved country is heading; towards a dangerous place, a place of intolerance.

What was even more devastating was the “silence” of the government that took office with a heavy baggage of a hateful and intolerant record under the banner of nationalism.

India was always been the icon of acceptance, diversity and peaceful co-existence. Something must be terribly wrong then.

To further echo this serious sentiment, over 30 of India’s top intellectuals including poets, authors and film-makers all returned their special and highly valued awards which they received on different occasions as a protest and objective statements against the intolerance messages that have been spreading at a very dangerous pace.

The world can ill afford an intolerant India. The Indians around the world are referred to as the global citizens for their ability to fit and adapt anywhere and with anybody and this is very much felt and witnessed with the Indians in the Diaspora around the world.

India has always been referred to an “Incredible India,” it simply doesn’t suit her to be called “intolerant India!”
