Dr. Soliman Fakeeh

Renowned Saudi physician Dr. Soliman Fakeeh, founder of Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, passed away on Wednesday evening. He was 83. Faqeeh’s body will be buried in Makkah after funeral prayers at the Grand Mosque on Thursday. Condolences will be received at his residence in Jeddah from Thursday, according to family sources.

He is survived by three sons- Dr. Mazen, Manal and Ammar. Prominent businessman Abdul Rahman Fakieh is his eldest brother.

Born in a business family in Makkah in 1931 (1350 H), Fakeeh completed his secondary school education in Makkah and then moved to Egypt for higher studies. He obtained his graduation in medicine from Kasr Alaini Medical College under the Cairo University and specialized in internal medicine from Ain Shams University in 1960. He is the first Saudi to receive a degree in internal medicine.

Fakeeh started his career by opening a clinic in Makkah in 1961 and then became director of Ajyad Central Hospital and Makkah Maternity Hospital. Later, he was appointed as the deputy director general of health affairs in Makkah region and then director general of health affairs in Jeddah and the western region.

After resigning the post, Fakeeh moved his private clinic to Jeddah and then founded Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital (DSFH) in 1978. He served as the director general of the hospital. Fakeeh was instrumental in making the hospital a true leader in the medical field, whose pioneering spirit and visionary resolve has – for over three decades – advanced by leaps the standards of healthcare delivery in the Kingdom and in the region.

DSFH was the first private hospital in the western region of Saudi Arabia to become accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) in 2006, 2009 and 2012 and by the Australian Council for Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) in 2008 and 2012. DSFH is presently considered one of the most distinguished hospitals in the Middle East, and is visited by over 500,000 patients every year, and it is the first hospital to publish a Corporate Social Responsibility report in the health care sector in the Middle East and North Africa region in 2008.
