Macron: France, US wish to work on new nuclear deal with Iran

Trump told reporters that if Iran threatened the US in any way, they will “pay a price like few countries have ever paid.”

:: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday he had very frank discussions with US President Donald Trump on the Iran nuclear agreement and believes the two countries should begin work to forge a new accord to address concerns about Tehran.

Macron told a news conference that four issues needed to be addressed: including blocking any Iranian nuclear activity until 2025, putting an end to Iranian ballistic missile activity and finding a political solution to contain Iran in the region.

“This is the only way to bring about stability,” Macron told a news conference with Trump.

Trump told reporters that if Iran threatened the US in any way, they will “pay a price like few countries have ever paid.”

Speaking about Syria, Macron told reporters that the goal of the US, French and British intervention was to finish the work against ISIS and other militant groups.

He added that it is impossible to give a timeline on when France’s involvement in Syria will end, however, they will assess the situation in the coming weeks and months on what needs to be done.

Macron said that the diplomatic goal in Syria is to ensure that Syrians will be able to live in peace, while Trump called for countries in the region to put soldiers on the ground.

Though Trump has warmly welcomed Macron to Washington, the two have disagreements to sort through, including Trump’s decision to leave the multinational Paris climate change agreement.

While with Macron, Trump refused to answer a reporter’s question as to whether he is considering a pardon for his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, whose office was raided by the FBI. Trump called it “a stupid question.”
