Doha freezes ruling family member’s assets

Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al-Thani

:: In a revengeful move, Qatar has reportedly frozen all assets of Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al-Thani, a prominent royal who recently opposed Doha’s policies that have caused a crisis in the Gulf.

Sheikh Abdullah tweeted on Saturday: “The Qatari regime honors me by freezing all of my bank accounts, and I thank them for this honor and I have the honor to present it to the homeland.”

He added: “I hope that Qatar will expel opportunists and friends of interests and return to the Gulf embrace.”

In August, Saudi King Salman received Sheikh Abdullah at his residence in the Moroccan city of Tangier and discussed the opening of Salwa border crossing for Qatari pilgrims.

Recently, the Anti-Terror Quartet (ATQ) — comprising Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the UAE affirmed that the measures taken against Qatar are “legitimate sovereign decisions.”

The ATQ said the measures cannot be considered a “blockade” by any means, but rather “a boycott emanating from the harm caused by irresponsible Doha actions through its support, financing and harboring of terrorist elements.”
