ISIS claims responsibility as eight stabbed in Russian city

:: Eight people were injured in a knife attack in the Siberian city of Surgut, the local office of the Russian law enforcement committee said in a statement published on its website.

“A man was moving along the main streets stabbing people”, it said, adding “the attacker has been killed.”

“The committee is investigating attempted murder”, the spokeswoman for the committee told Reuters by phone, adding she would not comment on whether the incident was terrorism related.

Meanwhile, ISIS has claimed responsibility for the stabbing attack in Surgut, Russia, according to the group’s Amaq news agency, reported Reuters.

Two of those stabbed are in a serious condition while five more are in a stable condition, the government of the Khanty-Mansi region said in a statement, calling the attacker so far “unidentified.”

It called for calm over the incident, saying that “in the interests of public calm and also of the investigation, citizens and media are recommended to use reliable information in assessing the situation until all the circumstances are established.”

Surgut, with a population of about 320,000, is an oil- and gas-producing center 2,100 kilometers northeast of Moscow.
