Yemeni vice president: Houthis targeting of Mecca backed by Iran

Yemeni Vice President Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar said the Houthis targeting of Mecca is a terrorist act.

:: Yemeni Vice President Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar said that the attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca is a terrorist act supported by Iran, reported Al Arabiya.

“This is a terrorist act that hurts the feelings of hundreds of millions around the world,” he said.

“Iran is responsible for what happened. The targeting of Mecca with a missile is something that every Muslim should rise to face and denounce,” he added.

“Tehran’s support of the Houthis and pushing them to target Mecca – more than once – is unjustified absurdity,” said Mohammed Ali al-Husseini, a Shiite cleric and the secretary general of the Arab Islamic Council in Lebanon.

He was referring to the last time Mecca was targeted by a ballistic missile, Saudi air defenses blocked it in Taif, 69 km from Mecca, and no one was hurt.

As for the dean of the Faculty of theology in Al-Azhar University in Cairo, he described the Houthis’ violation as suicidal, and said: “They are attempting suicide, an act that cannot be imagined by a sane person, as well as any true Muslim, the sacred house of Allah that God has made safe for mankind, those who seek to harm it await God’s painful punishment.”

The Saudi air defense forces managed to intercept a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi militia towards Mecca in a desperate attempt to disrupt the Hajj season, no damages were reported.
