Sacked FBI chief had asked for more money for Russia investigation

FBI Director James Comey is sworn in to testify before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on “Oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation” on Capitol Hill in Washington, US, May 3, 2017.

:: In a recent revelation, sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey had recently asked the Justice Department for a significant increase in money and personnel for the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s interference in last year’s presidential election.

The New York Times reported citing three officials with knowledge of his request that Comey asked for the resources during a meeting last week with Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, who wrote the Justice Department’s memo that was used to justify the F.B.I. director’s firing.

Earlier in a signed letter, Trump informed Comey that he was “hereby terminated and removed from office effective immediately,” explaining that he reached the conclusion that Comey was “not able to effectively lead the bureau.”

“It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission,” the letter added.

The White House said that Comey was fired based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

In a separate letter, Rosenstein argued that it was his transgressions over the Clinton email investigation that were the cause of his dismissal, while laying out the reasons for Comey’s firing.
