Gunman kills Paris policeman in Champs-Elysees district

People raise their arms to show their hands as they walk towards police on a side road near the Champs Elysees Avenue after two policemen were killed and another wounded in a shooting incident in Paris.

At least one policeman killed, another wounded in shooting incident in Paris just days ahead of France’s presidential election.

The person who fired on police on the Champs-Elysees on Thursday night, one of the world’s most prestigious boulevards, has been killed, a police source said.

Witnesses say a man got out of a car in the center of the Champs-Elysées and started shooting, killing a policeman and wounding two others.

“Police operation taking place in the Champs Elysee area,” Paris police said in a post on Twitter. “Avoid the area and comply with police instructions.”

“Police officers are being deployed heavily in the surrounding streets near the Champs-Elysees with many fearing that there would be further organized attacks in Paris,” Al Arabiya’s Paris correspondent Hussein Kneiber reported.

A French interior ministry spokesman said it was too early to say what the motive of the gunman was, but that it was clear the police officers had been deliberately targeted.

France has been in a state of emergency since the ISIS-led Paris attacks of November 2015.
