World’s heaviest woman sheds half her weight after treatment in India

Egyptian Eman Ahmed weighed 500 kg when she was airlifted to India in February this year, making her arguably the heaviest woman on the planet.

However, after two months of treatment that included surgery and a special diet, Eman has managed to lose a total of 242 kg, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, the doctor directing the team of surgeons treating her at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai, said. According to a news report, Dr Lakdawala said Eman’s procedure included a surgery and a special diet that followed surgery on March 7.

“The surgery (Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy) and a special diet has helped her lose 242kg (or 50 percent) since she landed in India,” Dr Lakdawala said, in remarks quoted by hindustantimes. The abrupt weight loss in the post-surgical recovery surprised the doctors who were expecting a slow drop in the weight.

After the surgery, Dr Lakdawala was quoted saying, “The initial improvement will be because of rapid water loss… we think she will lose another 20-30 kg a month over the next few months.” Besides the weight loss that got her to reach a weight of 262kg, the 36-year-old now has her organs improving in terms of their function.

“There is a spectacular improvement in her kidneys. Her creatinine levels — which the kidneys regulate — were 3.7 mg/dL when she came to us. It is now down to 1 mg/dL,” said Dr Hemal Shah, head of the Nephrology department and one of the 13 doctors treating Eman, in remarks quoted by hindustantimes.

Despite the improvements, Eman remains to be paralyzed on the right side of her body and suffering occasional seizures.
