British PM Theresa May reposes faith in Saudi Vision 2030

Jordan’s King Abdullah II meets with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Amman, Jordan April 3, 2017.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has defended her country’s ties with Saudi Arabia, especially in light of the changes proposed as part of its Vision 2030 program.

In an interview to the BBC, May said that during her upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, which got underway on Tuesday, she is scheduled to meet with a female Saudi minister. She also expressed the hope that people will see her as a woman leader.

The prime minister also faced questions about the UK’s support for the Saudi-led coalition, which is fighting rebels in neighboring Yemen. The prime minister said the UK was also a “significant donor” of aid.

Meeting female Saudi minister

“One of the meetings I’m going to be having when I’m in Saudi will be with a female minister. I’ll be meeting with her and talking to her about the role that she plays. And generally we do encourage people to look at women’s role in society,” May was quoted by BBC as saying.

Speaking to journalists as she travelled to Jordan, which she is visiting before travelling to Saudi Arabia, May said humanitarian aid was one of the issues she would be discussing on her trip.

Vision 2030’s goals included increasing women’s participation in the workforce from 22-30 percent. “I’ve talked to the Saudis on a number of occasions and raised issues of this sort. We have already seen some changes,” she added.
