Pakistan media has quoted Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria as having said on Thursday that Islamabad has joined the Saudi-led Islamic Military Alliance.

The spokesperson also said he had no knowledge of contacts between Saudi government and former army chief Raheel Sharif, who has been appointed the commander of force.

As per the information available on the official site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan, Zakaria, responding to media queries clarified: “The basic purpose of this force is counter terrorism. Terms of reference of counter terrorism operations were to be made.”

Answering a supplementary question on whether Pakistan has officially joined this alliance, the spokesman said: “We are already part of it.”
