Pakistani Christian clergyman joins Islamist party

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman announced Alam’s joining at a function held at Qasr-i-Naz.

Pakistani Christian clergyman Nazeer Alam has joined Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, an Islamist political party in Pakistan, reported Pakistan daily Dawn.

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman announced Alam’s joining at a function held at Qasr-i-Naz.

Alam’s joining of the Sunni Deobandi political party would strengthen the mission of the party, Fazlur said.

The Christian clergyman promised to promote democracy and push the country forward from the JUI-F stage.

Pakistan has been battling Islamic extremists for more than a decade as the country still hosts powerful armed groups that have killed tens of thousands of people. A growing number of civil society initiatives are aimed at what many see as the source of the problem – indoctrination of youth.
