Exceeding China and India, Egypt’s Cairo is world’s fastest-growing city in 2017

The population of metropolitan Cairo is expected to grow by 0.5 million in 2017 alone.

Cairo’s population is expected to grow by half a million people in 2017, to become the fastest growing-city around the world, a recent report has revealed.

In a list that included cities from China and India, which are known to be the world’s most populated nations, the population growth rate in the Egyptian capital was the highest.

The population of metropolitan Cairo is expected to grow by 0.5 million in 2017 alone, a Euromonitor International’s Global Economies and Consumers in 2017 report said.

While it estimated that the urban population around the world is growing at 2% every year, some cities exceed this growth rate by a wide margin.

It found that the most rapidly growing cities are located in the Middle East and Africa. Nigeria’s Abuja is forecast to grow by 4% in one year, and Qatar’s Doha is set to grow by 3 percent.

Those relatively small metropolises have high growth rates, yet it is the megacities in emerging markets that will maintain unprecedented population growth.

Cairo topped the list of the fastest-growing cities with 500,000 million people. The list also included Shanghai in China with a growth of about 400,000 people, and Beijing, Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, and Manila in the Philippines with an increase of more than 300,000 people in each city.

Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria was also on the list, with a population to increase by 100,000 people.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) puts Egypt’s total population at 92.5 million people.
