The Shoura Council has called on the Board of Investigation and Public Prosecution (BIPP) to effectively implement the agreements with countries on deporting prisoners, as this will result in saving SR1 billion per year.

“The monthly expenses on each prisoner in Saudi jails is around SR4,000, and there are 31,000 foreign prisoners, which means around SR1 billion annual cost to the exchequer,” Prince Khaled Al-Saud said during Monday’s session, local media reported.

For instance, an agreement on transfer of prisoners means that the two sides exchange sentenced prisoners in each other’s jurisdiction. This may help the process of social rehabilitation of the prisoners as they will be closer to their families.

Raising the issue of crimes against women, Shoura member Amal Al-Shaman slammed the BIPP for lack of investigation despite the fact that there are 433 assault cases, 399 morals and ethics cases and 2,300 attacks on females. She also came down heavily on the style of investigation by the authorities concerned.

“When a woman is being investigated, a Haia male officer is present with the investigator and you can imagine the plight of the female who is already in an investigation room.” She said that women should be investigated by female officers only.
