The National Commercial Committee at the Council of Saudi Chambers (CSC) recently tackled the issue of absconding workers with Deputy Minister of Labor Ahmed bin Saleh Al-Humaidan to discuss difficulties faced by the private sector in its dealings with the ministry.

The meeting also explored solutions that would enable the sector to fulfill its role in economic development.

According to the chairman of the committee, Dr. Suleiman Aleiiri, the meeting discussed a number of items on the agenda concerning the labor market situation and reasons behind expats absconding from duty.

They also dwelt on issues of unproductive Saudi workers who have been employed for the sake of Saudization only, and not for actual needs, and how this and other irregularities are causing an increase in prices of goods and services.

The meeting also proposed exemption for micro and medium enterprises in small towns, which require women-related jobs. They also requested installation of a mailbox for receiving commercial mail at a uniform rate as service charge.

Speaking on solutions to overcome these problems, the committee proposed the formation of joint working groups between the CSC and MoL to explore the feasibility of a solution before taking any final step.

They also pleaded with the ministry to limit the number of workers between 15-20 at micro-establishments, 21-30 for medium-size enterprises (MSEs) and from 31-100 employees for others.

They told the ministry not to impose conditions of Saudization on micro-enterprises in the interest of maintaining stability and growth in the market. They also demanded a deadline for such establishments and facilitation of their needs for visas.

The committee also proposed the continued support of the Human Resources Development Fund (at 50 percent of the salary) for temporary Saudi employees during the probationary period.

It also urged the MoL to be part of contracts between Saudi employers and Saudi applicants to commit both parties to the contract in the interest of maintaining working relationships on the ground.
