A team of 15 doctors here successfully separated a Yemeni boy from his parasitic twin in a two-and-a-half hour operation on Wednesday.

The team, led by Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the former health minister known worldwide for his skills in this medical discipline, performed the operation on Ahmed bin Nabil Abdel Haq. The child is from Taiz, which is about 256 km from the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The boy had arrived with his parents from Yemen on Sunday under the orders of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman. The arrangements were made by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, which Al-Rabeeah heads.

In a statement to the press, Al-Rabeeah said that the surgery, held at King Abdullah Specialist Children Hospital, which is part of King Abdulaziz Medical City, involved doctors and nurses experienced in anesthesia, pediatrics and plastic surgery. The patient is currently in the intensive care unit of the pediatric ward and would be moved to the general ward after a few days. He is in a stable condition.

Al-Rabeeah thanked King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and National Guard Minister Prince Miteb bin Abdullah for making the operation a success.

Bandar bin Abdul Mohsen Knawy, executive general manager of the national guard ministry’s health division, thanked the king for his generosity, according to the release.

Thursday’s separation was the 38th in a series of surgeries performed on conjoined twins in the Kingdom since 1990, from more than 18 countries including Sudan, Yemen, Egypt, Malaysia, Philippines, Poland, Morocco and Iraq.

Last March, surgeons led by Al-Rabeeah successfully separated conjoined Yemeni twins at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.
