Mir Jean Bou Chaaya

Very Big Shot’, a comedy about two small-time drug dealers who want to go straight but take on one last job, won top prize Saturday at the Marrakesh film festival.

The movie was directed by Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya, a young Lebanese who started his career in 2008 with a music video dedicated to Lebanese army martyrs and who has written, directed or edited eight short films.

The prize for best direction went to Gabriel Mascaro’s “Neon Bull,” a drama about the Brazilian rodeo scene. Best actor was Gunnar Jonsson for Dabur Kari’s “Virgin Mountain,” while the award for best actress went to Galatea Bellugi in Guillaume Senez’s “Keeper.”

The jury for the 15th edition of the festival was headed by American producer and director Francis Ford Coppola. He opened the ceremony and exceptionally chose to award the top prize first.

“Together we saw 15 films,” he said of his fellow jurors, directors Naomi Kawase, Anton Corbijn and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, actresses Olga Kurylenko, Amal Ayouch and Richa Chadda, and actors Sergio Castellito and Sami Bouajila.
