Leading members of the Indian expatriate community celebrated their country’s Constitution Day with a special function held at the consulate, with several speakers highlighting the document’s role in uniting the country.

Constitution Day, which is held every year on Nov. 26, was a “great day” because it saw the signing into force in 1949 of the country’s overarching legislation, said Consul General B.S. Mubarak.

The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in November but only came into effect on Jan. 26, 1950, which is the Republic Day of India, said Mubarak.

Mohammad Raghib Qureshi, head of chancery, who conducted the program, spoke about the salient features of the Constitution to those present, which included consulate officials, and teachers and students from the Indian International School-Jeddah (IISJ).

Raida Khan of Class X spoke about how the Constitution was formed, while Reuben Roy of Class XII described the preamble and other features. From among the teachers, Kausar Sultana spoke about the “fundamental duties” enshrined in the document, and Mohammad Imran discussed its impact on social and political change in India.
