75% food industries ‘cannot be monitored’

A whopping 75 percent of food industries and distribution centers in the Kingdom are not under surveillance or monitoring because they are located in remote areas.

The startling revelation was made by the Saudi Food and Drugs Authority (SFDA) in an official document, an online newspaper reported on Sunday.

Citizens can, however, take heart from the fact that the SFDA succeeds in monitoring a good 75 percent of imported items.

The SFDA also said that it monitors 95 percent of food items and medicines — local and imported — and could not do so in the rest of five percent of the products.

It said that there are 200,000 locally registered imported food products and medicines, which helps them in carrying out inspections as importers are required to register the product with the SFDA.

The SFDA document said that electronic inspection is easy, and 60 percent to 70 percent shipments are inspected in just an hour. The authority receives 550,000 shipments in a year or 250 per day in Jeddah, it added.
