Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi swore in the country’s new justice minister on Sunday, the same man who had him sentenced to death in 1987, a presidential source told Al Arabiya News Channel’s Arabic website.

Khaled Omar Bajunaid, then attorney general of the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), accused Hadi of terrorism, vandalism, and treason following his involvement in the 1986 civil war.

Hadi was found guilty of treason after he defected to Northern Yemen along with his political party members that fought other factions over the control of Aden.

But the execution was never carried out because Hadi had fled to northern Yemen and returned to the south only after the unification.

Hadi’s appointment of Bajunaid was seen as a display of forgiveness and reconciliation, as well as an effort to reinstate the rule of the judiciary, a necessary component to establish the rule of law, the source told Al Arabiya Net.
