Two Israeli soldiers near the border with Egypt were wounded by gunfire from Sinai on Wednesday, Al Arabiya correspondent reported, citing the Israeli army.

In a statement on Twitter, the army said: “2 IDF soldiers were injured by fire directed at them from Egypt. The soldiers were evacuated to a hospital.”

“Preliminary reports regarding fire opened at IDF forces from the area of the Egyptian border are now being reviewed. More details to follow,” the army statement added.

The incident took place close to the center of Israel’s 150-mile (240-kilometer) border with the Egyptian Sinai, public radio said.

Sources in Egypt told Al Arabiya that the Israeli soldiers were wounded in an exchange of fire between the Egyptian army and smugglers.
