September 23 marks a proud moment for Saudis. The same day in 1932 King Abdulaziz Al-Saud laid the foundations of the modern-day Saudi Arabia. For the past few years, Saudis — men, women and the youths — observe this day with full national zeal by waving the Saudi flags and decorating streets with portraits of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Crown Prince Salman and Deputy Crown Prince Muqrin.

Nowadays, these celebrations have taken a different form and there is a visible shift in the views of Saudis regarding the true meanings of this day. Since its establishment, Saudi Arabia has come a long way and within no time has emerged as one of the most influential countries of the world. The Kingdom is a huge country with a fast-growing population. Despite the growing population, the Saudi government is one of the few in the world, which provides free education, free health facilities and imposes no income tax on its citizens. In addition to that the government is committed to introduce mega development projects in all spheres of life across the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia has been blessed with immense natural resources and the security and economic stability is something we should all cherish. The relation between the rulers and the ruled are perhaps the best when compared with other countries.

It is important for the Saudis to appreciate what the Kingdom has achieved in the past few decades. Amid so much turmoil around us, it has become all the more important for us to understand the true meanings of nationhood and observe this National Day with full zeal and ambitions to push the country to even greater heights. Our youths should be more observant of the happenings around them and work for the betterment of the Kingdom.

It is imperative to remain vigilant at a time when the wind of instability and uncertainty is blowing all across the Middle East. Fortunately, Saudi Arabia is witnessing unprecedented boost in development projects like road networks, hospitals, schools, universities, stadiums, airports and industrial cities.

We are responsible for the upkeep of these projects upon completion. During the celebrations of the Saudi National Day, every Saudi and expatriate should join hands to keep the streets clean and respect the roads by obeying the law. This is what patriotism is all about. Waving the Saudi flag is a nice gesture but to behave in a proper manner is more important. Our youths should be taught as to how to become responsible citizens by focusing on their studies and respecting others.

In the past years, the world and expatriates in the Kingdom had seen that the joy of celebrating the National Day among all Saudis is spontaneous. On Sept. 23, there will be a lot of celebration but the most beautiful National Day celebration starts at home. It is the family unity and love that make up the most solid part of a great country. Raising a child the right way and educating him/her is the best that a citizen can give to the country.
