Bangladeshi expatriates in the Kingdom joined compatriots around the world on Saturday to pay tribute to father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the 39th anniversary of his assassination on Aug. 15, 1975.

Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh hoisted the national flag at half-mast to mark the national day of mourning in Bangladesh. Ambassador Md. Shahidul Islam, along with embassy officials and a significant number of community members living in Riyadh, later attended special prayers for Mujib and his family members who were killed along with him.

The ambassador, accompanied by officials, placed a wreath on the portrait of Mujib. Members of Riyadh Central Awalim League and Bangbandhu Foundation, Saudi Arabia, also placed wreaths on the portrait.

In the afternoon, Islam chaired a meeting that discussed the significance of the day. Messages from the president, prime minister and foreign minister were read out. Speeches by community leaders followed. About 500 Bangladeshi nationals attended.

The speakers highlighted the leadership qualities and political wisdom of Mujib who led the liberation war of Bangladesh. They also praised him for his dedication to the development and well-being of the country and its people.

Bangladesh achieved independence due to the supreme sacrifices made by the people under the leadership of Sheikh Mujib after a nine-month-long struggle, the speakers said.

In his speech, Islam paid tribute to Mujib, whose “unparalleled leadership inspired the people to fight for independence”. He also prayed for the salvation of the souls of Mujib, members of his family, relatives and others who died with him.

Islam underlined the need for renewing the commitment to remain united and make concerted efforts for the socioeconomic development of Bangladesh.

On existing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, the ambassador urged the community members to uphold the image of their country by obeying the Kingdom’s rules and regulations.

While highlighting his government’s achievements, Islam said the days are not too far when Bangladesh will occupy an important position in the international arena and it will become a “golden Bengal” as envisioned by the father of the nation.

At the end of the program, a documentary titled “Ashamapto Mohakabbo” on the life and achievements of Sheikh Mujib was screened.
