Saudi family in Virginia sued for alleged abuse of maid

An African maid in US has sued her Saudi sponsors for alleged psychological and physical abuse, an online paper reported.

The Kenya-born maid escaped from the household eight months after their arrival in Virginia after she contacted an anti-human trafficking task force in the country, the paper said.

The maid had come to the Kingdom following a contract to work with the family, but she alleged she was forced to relocate with them in US, the paper said quoting news released by the Courthouse News Service.

The Saudi family reportedly promised her of an increase in salary if she agreed to move with them to the US. She said her passport was seized after they arrived at their new house in northern Virginia. Also, she alleged to receiving only $400 as her salary instead of $1,600 as was earlier promised.

The maid said she was forced to work from early morning until midnight doing all types of housework, including cleaning, cooking, carrying luggage and tending to the numerous demands made by family members and their guests.

“The maid also alleges that the owner never allowed her to sit on any of the chairs, saying they would get dirty.”

“The plaintiff used to sleep in the basement and had no heating during the cool winter season, a matter that caused her to develop allergies in her chest and back pain,” the paper said.

The plaintiff is demanding compensation for psychological and physical harm, ill-treatment and denial of medical care or contact with her family, not to mention being prevented from going back home, the report said.
