Employee gets lashes, jail for murder attempt

The Jeddah Criminal Court has sentenced a man to one year in prison and 200 lashes for trying to poison a colleague at his company with insecticide in his milk, according to local media.

The man, a senior employee of the Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC), would have the lashes divided into four sessions in front of the STC building, Corniche Center, Sairafi Mall, and main vegetable center in Jeddah.

As part of the verdict, the convicted man reportedly has to memorize 100 Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet, peace be upon him), three parts of the Holy Qur’an, and be tested after reading certain Islamic books.

The verdict was reportedly issued in the presence of all parties, including STC employees who had acted as witnesses. The plaintiff had accused the convicted employee of trying to kill him.

The court stated the man’s actions were considered to be a major sin because it could have led to the loss of life.

It was similar to the case of the Jewish woman who had tried to poison a sheep meant for the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Investigators had found the insecticide Diazinon in the plaintiff’s milk.
