SCOT carries out 558 kidney transplant ops

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplant (SCOT) carried out 558 kidney transplant operations in 2013 which brought the number of operations to 5,820 cases since the inception of the program in 1984, local media said quoting a report released by SCOT.

According to the report, the SCOT carried out 462 kidney transplant operations from living donors and another 96 cases from brain-dead patients.

As regards liver transplant, the number of operations stood at 1,398 of which 678 livers were taken from living donors while the remaining 720 livers were taken from donors after death, the report said.

The number of full heart transplant operations reached 21 cases whereas some 24,000 cornea transplant cases have been made since the inception of the program, the report said.

On the other hand, some 25 and 125 pancreas and lung transplant cases, respectively, were carried out since 1990, the report said.

In the context of the organ exchange program between the Kingdom and Spain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain some 55 kidneys, 100 livers, 10 hearts, 47 heart valves, 18 lungs, 4 corneas, and one pancreas were exchanged, the report said.
