The heavy smoke that engulfed a blazing residential building in Jeddah on Friday evening prompted a 13-year-old girl to jump out of a window on the first floor, sustaining pelvic injuries, said Col. Saeed Sarhan, Jeddah Civil Defense spokesman.

Civil Defense officers succeeded in putting out the fire and bringing the situation under control, according to officials.

“The fire originated at the entrance of a five-floor residential building situated in the northern part of the Salamah district at 6:16 p.m., creating panic among the building’s residents,” said Sarhan.

A total of 26 residents climbed to safety on the rooftop out of sheer panic, he said.

“A 63-strong Civil Defense team made its way to the terrace on ladders and evacuated residents.”

Sarhan said the girl who had jumped out the window was transferred to a hospital by Saudi Red Crescent teams, while residents were treated on the spot by both Health Ministry and Red Crescent teams,” said Sarhan.

“Brig. Salem Matrafi, Civil Defense director in Jeddah, personally monitored the rescue operation, in which members of the Saudi Electric Company (SEC) also took part,” he said.
