A 17-year-old Yemeni girl committed suicide in Asir region owing to an abusive relationship with her aged Saudi husband, Al-Riyadh daily reported.

The victim, Ghadir, was brought to Asir Hospital in critical condition early on Wednesday morning where the medical staff in the emergency and intensive care unit (ICU) tried to save her life after she reportedly tried to hang herself earlier that night, the newspaper said.

Asir Police spokesman Capt. Mohamed Al-Shahrani said the Operations Center at Asir Police received a notification of a case of suffocation of a married woman, 17 years of age. Upon arriving at the site, they discovered her hanging by a rope tied to the ceiling fan.

“The woman was immediately moved to Asir Central Hospital but died on Wednesday morning and the case was referred to concerned bodies for further investigation,” Al-Shahrani said.

The woman was an orphan and a Yemeni national. She had been married to a Saudi man much older than her and was often exposed to domestic violence, the newspaper said quoting sources.
