Dubai court upholds death sentence for child rapist-killer

The murder Obaida outraged the nation

A Jordanian man convicted of the rape and murder of an eight-year-old boy will be executed, Dubai’s Cassation Court ruled on Monday, UAE daily Gulf News has reported.

Nidal Eisa Abdullah, 49, was convicted on August 15 last year of the killing of Jordanian boy Obaida Ebrahim Al Sedqi Al Aqrabawi. The child’s body was found on May 22, 2016.

Abdullah appealed the execution, but the court this week upheld the death sentence – a ruling that was welcomed by family members of Obaida, the report added.

The victim’s father was quoted saying he found some comfort from the decision- now that his son’s kidnapper, rapist and killer would ‘soon meet justice’.

“The verdict gives us peace now,” the father told Gulf News. “If it was in my hands, as a father, I would have stoned him to death because of the pain my son must have gone through; I have faith in the UAE justice system.”

Obaida was abducted on May 20, 2016, near to where his father runs a garage in Sharjah. His captor later raped and murdered him, before dumping his body. His remains were discovered in the Al Warqa area of Dubai.

His father said his wife – who thanked the UAE government – would never forget what happened to their son, adding that they were now just waiting for the “implementation of the verdict and I hope it will happen soon”.

The boy’s mother told the newspaper: “The killer deserved what he will face and it’s the least punishment that he deserved. Now the soul of my son will rest in peace.”

Members of the convicted killer, Abdullah’s, family called the victim’s father – the report added – pleading for him to pardon their son, but he said he “insisted that the killer should get what he deserved”.

The defendant had previously told the court that he had mental health problems and that he was unaware of what he had done. But he had also told the court that while he admitted killing the boy, he claimed he had not kidnapped him as the child rode with him voluntarily.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar told a packed court room on Monday: “The court has unanimously agreed to sentence defendant Nidal Eisa Abdullah to death. The convict will also have to pay 21,000 AED in temporary compensation to the blood parents.”

Relatives of the murdered boy responded to the announcement by chanting “God is great … God is great.”
