Dar Al-Hekma University’s law team secured first place in the Championship Team Winner category at the seventh annual Vis Middle East Pre-Moot held in Kuwait earlier this month.

The Saudi team qualified for the 24th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, which will be held on April 6-13.

The Middle East Pre-Moot provides a platform where regional arbitration practitioners — lawyers and judges — share experiences while helping students gain practical arbitration training in a supportive and academic environment.

One of the tools in developing skills is entering essential competitions and the Dar Al-Hekma pre-moot team began preparing for the competition at the beginning of the fall semester.

“Participating for the fifth time and winning once again in such a pre-eminent moot competition reflects positively on Dar Al-Hekma University students and the university as a whole,” said Suhair H. Al-Qurashi, president of Dar Al-Hekma University. “Clearly we must be doing something right, which allows us to win repeatedly in competitions and demonstrates the caliber of our future graduates. We are very much aligned with the Saudi Vision 2030, which plans to integrate more women into the workforce and together we will be able to increase women’s participation from 22 percent to 30 percent.”

It was the fifth time Dar Al-Hekma University’s law team participated in the Pre-Moot Middle East round. Dar Al-Hekma’s team included: Duaa Amer, Nouf Bannan, Tala Bukhari, Ayah Hashim, Lina Samaha, Wid Massoud and Rahaf Zaini. Their coaches were Lina Bugshan and Lamia Al-Otaibi, both 2016 law graduates and previous participants and winners.

The Dar Al-Hekma crew competed against 16 other teams from Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Afghanistan, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Bahrain. The Dar Al-Hekma University law team won Best Claimant Oralist (Wid Massoud) and first place as Championship Team Winner.
