Saudi FM says Russia ‘ready’ to heal rift between Gulf states, Iran
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir addresses journalists during a press conference in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said Tuesday that Russia has expressed its readiness to heal a rift between Gulf states and Iran.
However, closer ties with Tehran are not on the cards, Adel Al-Jubeir told reporters after a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting in the capital Riyadh.
The kingdom’s top diplomat said that Tehran’s “interference” and support of terrorists in Gulf states made reconciliation impossible, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.
Saudi cut diplomatic ties with Iran back in January, shortly after its Tehran embassy was stormed by protestors.
The foreign minister also discussed other conflict-torn counties in the region.
He said that many countries are working to find a peaceful solution in Yemen. He also added that Gulf states had no plan in the pipeline to launch talks over a unity government in Libya.
Saudi Arabia has led an Arab Coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi militias and loyalists to the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh in its southern neighbor since late March last year.
Libya has been torn apart by rival factions in the years following the ouster and killing of longtime strongman Muammar Qaddafi in 2011. Western nations view a unity government as the best hope for ending the north African country’s chaos and uniting all factions against an increasingly powerful ISIS affiliate.
