The Universiti Islam Malaysia (UIM), also known as the Islamic University of Malaysia, the first and only postgraduate university in the Southeast Asian country, recently honored Saudi Arabia for its role in its foundation 60 years ago.

Since its inception in 1955, efforts are under way at the UIM to raise funds in to develop the main campus on 100-acre land in Cyberjaya, known as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia, and the Kingdom and some other countries extended cooperation.

“A grand function, which was attended by higher education minister Dato Seri Idris Jusoh, was organized in Kuala Lumpur to honor the Kingdom as well as a number of other countries which contributed to its founding 60 years ago,” an official at the Saudi embassy in Malaysia said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the OIC International Business Conference, UIM Rector Mohammad Yousuf Noor appreciated the Kingdom’s contribution for the material and financial support in establishing and developing the initial building blocks of the UIM.

Notably, in 1968 a scientific, cultural and religious center building was built as a result of donation from the Kingdom and the building was named Al-Malik Faisal Hall in commemoration of the then Saudi King Faisal.

Saudi cultural attache in Malaysia Zayed Al-Harthy, who received the plaque on behalf of the Kingdom, said, “We are sparing no effort in supporting academic excellence and to contribute to preaching Islam with wisdom to help people adopt the right approach toward a successful life in this world as well as hereafter.”
