Spokesman for the Arab coalition forces Brig. Gen. Ahmed Asiri has said that operations in Yemen will continue for the time being given that they have not received any formal Houthi promises on a ceasefire agreement, Asiri told Al Arabiya News Channel’s Arabic language website.

Asiri also said coalition forces will continue to implement military operations against the Houthi militias and forces loyal to ousted former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in order to achieve the objectives of restoring legitimacy and stability in Yemen through U.N. Resolution 2216.

The resolution was passed in April under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter and imposes sanctions against the leader of the Houthi movement along with Yemen’s former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh. It also calls for Houthi militias to “immediately and unconditionally end violence and refrain from further unilateral actions.”

As of Friday, Asiri said that coalition forces and the internationally recognized government of Yemeni President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi have not been offered any formal pledges for a ceasefire from Houthi militias.

“If that were to happen, it will be formally announced by the Yemeni government and the United Nations,” Asiri told Al Arabiya.

Mainstream media in recent days have been reporting on supposedly pledges by Houthi and Saleh militias to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of their readiness to join talks to end more than six months of fighting.
