Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal is set to approve designs for the new public transportation project which have been completed by the transportation committee in Jeddah, as announced by Jeddah Mayor Hani Aburas.

The designs feature artistic touches which contribute to magnifying the architectural beauty of the region. The project includes preliminary designs for all stations, buildings and car parks, in addition to preparing distinctive urban features for all elements of the project.

The public transportation project in Jeddah comprises four stages: The initial stage invited 50 architectural consultants to submit plans for the rehabilitation stage. The second stage concerned technical offers, for which the authority invited 11 consultants to present technical offers on the matter. Four companies were chosen to participate in the competition. The third stage included presentation of designs for all parts of the project to evaluate them in the fourth and final stage, which culminates with the awarding of the contract according to defined parameters and financial offers.

The international company for evaluating the architectural designs of the project includes Howayda Al-Harithy from Saudi Arabia, who has a Ph.D. from Harvard University and works as president of the architectural design department at the American University of Beirut. In addition to others, the group also includes well-known architects Rafael Moneo and Richard Brend.

The Jeddah Metro Company will manage the implementation of the project including all planning, design, establishment and testing stages. The company has signed the second basic contract of the project which includes engineering consulting services with the French Systra company. The drafting of the initial designs include car parks, civil work, as well as an electronic control system, an overnight center and complete control of the public transport network.

The public transport project was launched in Jeddah through three basic contracts, one of which is to offer consultative services for the preparatory program for the public transportation project in Jeddah signed with AECOM. The period of the contract is 18 months.

The company will support Jeddah Metro with specialists and will participate in all stages of the project, prepare strategies to tender the public transportation project for alliances, establish management system programs, manage and supervise projects with supervising preliminary engineering designs and architectural consultants, review engineering and architectural designs, support Jeddah Metro Company to draft competition documents and train contractors, and prepare service scope for all offices.
