Eid likely on Monday

Art of Moon Sighting

Eid Al-Fitr will probably fall on Monday (July 28), according to an Islamic astronomical organization in Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed Shawkat Oudah, chairman of the Islamic Crescent Observation Project, told Arabic daily Al-Madinah on Tuesday that most of the Islamic countries are likely to sight the Shawwal moon on Sunday (July 27).

He said the geocentric conjunction (birth of new moon) will happen before sunset and the moon will remain in the skies after sunset on that day in the majority of Arab countries.

Oudah said the new moon signaling the advent of Eid will not be seen by the naked eye or an optical aid.
Oudah said the first day of Eid will be on Monday for the people who use astronomical calculations and do not depend on visual sighting.

He said the Eid will be on Tuesday for the countries which depend mainly on visual sighting and strongly scrutinize the testimonies of those who claim to have sighted the moon.
