KHAFJI : Saudi authorities stormed a house in the Eastern Province city of Khafji that is alleged to have been used as a church on Friday, Alsharq daily reported.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) who raided the house in the city’s Aziziyah neighborhood arrested 27 people of various Asian nationalities, including women and children, and seized copies of the Bible and various musical instruments.

The Haia members who stormed the house found the men, women and children engaged in religious rituals in one of the rooms.

A citizen reported suspicious activities in the house to the Haia and alleged that an Indian man had turned his residence into a church.

The Haia members placed the house under surveillance to verify the report.

After seeing a large number of people going into the house, they immediately called for police backup and raided the house.

Alsharq called the Haia spokesman for the Eastern Province, Sheikh Debaikhi Al-Debaikhi, for comments about the case but his cell phone was switched off. A message was sent to him but he did not reply.

The Haia spokesman in Khafji was also contacted regarding the case but he said Sheikh Al-Debaikhi was the only authorized person to give details in connection with the raid and the arrests of 27 Asians.
